What's considered an adult site? Find out...

by John Roberts on Jun 12th, 2007

The famous quote about defining pornography is “I know it when I see it,” from a 1964 Supreme Court case. I’m glad we’re working with St. Bernard Software to get human-reviewed categorization of adult sites for our adult site blocking service.

At home, I’m the network administrator. While testing adult site blocking, I learned that you need to be careful what you block. My wife alerted (ahem) me to my overzealous blocking. For the interested, TMZ.com is classified as both lingerie/bikini and adult themes. :-) I cannot disagree… but it’s still a fun celebrity gossip site. It’s no longer blocked on my network, though other categories are.

That kind of control is useful, and it’s why we offer 6 categories, so you can make the right choices for your network.

Avoid making my domestic misstep. Check a site to find out whether it would be blocked, and why.

DNS outages are not Comcastic

by Allison Rhodes on Jun 11th, 2007

BroadbandReports.com tells us Comcast’s DNS servers had a rough weekend. According to reports from Comcast customers, instead of being able to surf freely they were confronted with this page when they attempted to visit any Web site:

It’s not clear if the problem continues today, but one thing is certain: OpenDNS fixed the problem.

Welcome to OpenDNS, Comcast customers! :)

Adult site blocking now available on OpenDNS

by Mike Damm on Jun 10th, 2007

Last month, when we launched the ability to block specific domains, we heard from you loud and clear: you want the ability to block adult websites in an easy way that puts you in control. Today we’re excited to offer you that ability.

Like everything else we do, we wanted this feature to be powerful and simple to use. That’s why we teamed up with the smart folks at St. Bernard Software (a leader in internet filtering) to make it happen. St. Bernard’s iGuard service is the only 100% human-reviewed system of its kind with millions of sites categorized and reviewed.

Everyone has a different idea of what they consider to be adult content and we wouldn’t pretend to guess what it is. That’s why we’ve broken our adult site blocking feature into six categories that cover different themes. Pick the ones you want to block or don’t block anything; it’s up to you.

If you’re interested in blocking adult content, OpenDNS is the easiest way to do it. Like all our other features, it requires no on-site hardware, there’s no software to install or update, and it’s free.

Learn more or turn it on now.

Some feedback for a Friday?

by David Ulevitch on Jun 8th, 2007

It’s a Friday and it’s warm out. So naturally I’m heading to a datacenter with George to go rack some gear. :-) Before I head out, I wanted to do a quick post and let people know that we’ve expanded our testimonials page a bit and would love to get more feedback on there.

Lots of you write into support and tell us how much you enjoy OpenDNS or how it’s helped you out, which is awesome. I want to share those comments with the world. If you head over to the testimonials page and add some feedback in the box on the right we’ll approve it and it’ll be one of the hundreds (soon to be thousands I’m hoping) that scrolls by on our homepage.

For those of you who are bloggers, we already showcase your coverage over here.

Have a great weekend!
